A. General

  • The Competitions is open to all artists using wood as the major material for their artwork. 
  • Eligible entries must have been completed within the last two years, except Master level, where there is no time limits.
  • Each competitor can enter only one of the following competition levels: junior, youth, novice, intermediate, open, or master. However, all competitors regardless of any other competition levels they otherwise enter can compete in the No-Level categories and for the “Sponsor Purchase Awards”.
  • Competitors can enter two artwork of their own work per designated category.
  • Competitors must make their own choice as to the level and category in which they enter. However, the Competition and Show Committee reserve the right to combine any categories where the number of entries is not sufficient to provide competition and to transfer any artwork from one category to another by the recommendation of judges.
  • OWCA reserves the right to accept or reject any entry and to display only those that are acceptable quality or that exhibit space may permits.
  • Materials other than wood may be used, provided such material, in the opinion of the judges, is appropriate and used in a subsidiary manner.
  • Every relief work must be submitted with its own stand for display.
  • More than one subject on a single base is considered one entry..
  • Pieces completed by more than one person must be noted and entered at the level of the senior partner.
  • While every reasonable precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of artworks in the competition, it must be understood that artists are required to directly assume all risks of loss or damage. Should any article be accidentally damaged, lost or stolen, OWCA will render all assistance in their power for the recovery of the item, but will not recognize any claim for payment of the value or any portion thereof.              
  • The rights to alter, interpret, amend, add to or cancel any of these rules or to grant relaxation from them in individual cases is reserved to the Competition and Show Committee in their absolute discretion. Should any questions arise not provided for in these rules and regulations, the decision of the committee of OWCA is final.

B. Competition Levels

MASTERS LEVEL is for professional artists and for all who are wishing to participate in the highest level of this competition.

  • There is no completion date restriction, but an artwork must not have won a 1st in previous OWCA Masters.
  • Entries will NOT be eligible for Best of Show.
  • There is no category segregation for this level.

OPEN LEVEL is for artists who are not competing in the Masters Level, OR have won

  • an Intermediate Best of Level OR, 
  • total of ten 1st place ribbons at the Intermediate level.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL is for artists who have won

  • a Novice Best of Level OR,
  • total of five 1st place ribbons at the Novice level.

NOVICE LEVEL is open to any artists who have yet to win five 1st place ribbons.

YOUTH LEVEL is for young artists between the age of 13 to 16 years, inclusive. No category segregation for this level.

JUNIOR LEVEL is for young artists 12 years or younger. There is no category segregation for this level.

NO-LEVEL is new for 2008. Any non-professional artists can participate in these categories regardless of the level s/he otherwise competing.

      • (2)  Caricatures
      • (3)  Animal – realistic (may include human)
      • (4)  Relief Carving – all forms
      • (5)  Waterfowl – decorative, realistic, life size
      • (6)  Waterfowl – unpainted, realistic, life size
      • (7)  Song Birds 
      • (8)  Birds of Prey 
      • (9)  All other birds 
      • (10) Wood burning
      • (11) Stylized or Abstract
      • (12) North American Native Art
      • (13) Miscellaneous
  • II. No-Level Competition Categories (new for 2008)
      • (14) Chip Carvings – all forms
      • (15) Marine Life
      • (16) Canes, Walking Sticks
      • (17) Bark Carving
      • (18) Insects (new for 2008)
      • (19) Birds - miniature, half size or less (new for 2008)
      • (20) Waterfowl – miniature, half size or less
      • (21) Wood turning (new for 2008)
      • (22) Intarsia (new for 2008)
      • (23) Marquetry (new for 2008)

D. Judging Criteria

To be judged separately, a category should have a minimum of 4 entries. Failing this, that category may be combined with others in comparable judging criteria.

Judging will be base on: 

  • Artistry, Originality, Creativity
  • Degree of Complexity
  • Skilled Execution
  • Accuracy (including painting)
  • Life-like presence, essence if applicable
  • Perspective, essence if applicable

Best of Level judging:

All 1st place winners of each Category in the Novice, Intermediate, Open and No-Level are eligible.

Best of Show judging:

All 1st place winners of all Categories are eligible.

Signature and/or Identification on the carving must be covered with tape prior to the judging. In any category, the judges will award only such prize ribbons as they deem the quality of work deserves.

Judges’ decisions are final.

E. Awards

More than $9,000 value in prizes

 All Best of Level, Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place carvings will receive a ribbon and a prize.

All entries for the Youth and Junior levels will receive a gift of appreciation.

All carvers who enter into the competition will receive a certificate of appreciation.

The People’s Choice Award is $500 cash.

The Best Table Award is a gift certificate.

The Sponsor Purchase Awards are $500 cash each.

F. Cash Prizes

Sponsor Purchase Awards: First place is $500 cash each.

People Choice Award: $500 cash donated by Fred Zavadil.

Master: First place is $1000, second is $200, and third is $100.

Best of Show: First $500, second $200, and third $100.

Best of Level: Open, Intermediate, Novice $100 each

Ontario Wood Carvers Association reserves the right to exchange some or all amounts to equal or higher value of gift certificates with the exception of Sponsor Purchase Awards, the People Choice Award and cash donated to that specific purpose. 

G. Entry Procedures, Registration and Fees

I. Entry Procedures

Option 1:
By Mail
- Entry Form and payment may be sent by mail up to October 15, 2008.
Make cheques payable to the Ontario Wood Carvers Association and mail to :

Artists registering by mail are eligible to receive $2 rebate from the 1st entry fee.
Please note, that no carvings will be accepted by mail.

Option 2:
By E-Mail – send detailed information, as you would if sending in an Entry Form, to show@ontariowoodcarvers.com by no later than October 20, 2008. An Entry Form will then be completed and will require your signature, along with payment, at registration.

Artists registering by e-mail are eligible to receive $2 rebate from the 1
st entry fee.

Option 3:
In person – October 24, 2008 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm and October 25, 2008 from 9:00 am to 10:00 am at the Competition and Show location, at Black Creek Pioneer Village. Entry Forms will be available and payment will be accepted.

Please note, that on the designated time of October 25, 2008 competition entries will only be accepted if exhibit space still permits.

II. Registration

Entries will be accepted at the Black Creek Pioneer Village exhibition area at the times indicated in the “in person” registration above.

Entries can be brought in by other than the actual carver provided the carver has filled in and signed the Entry Form. Volunteers will assist with registration.

Upon Registration a Claim Ticket will be issued and must be retained in order to claim an entry.

Entries will remain on display for the duration of the show and MUST NOT be removed until 4:30 pm on Sunday, October 26, 2008. Pickup is between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm. Containers will not be stored at the show.

III. Entry Fees

  • Junior and Youth levels are free.
  • Novice, Intermediate, Open and No-Level:
    • First carving is $10.00; there is a $2.00 rebate if registered by mail or e-mail.
    • Additional carvings are $5.00. 
  • Masters
    • First carving is $20.00; there is a $2.00 rebate if registered by mail or e-mail.
    • Additional carvings are $10.00. 
  • Sponsor Purchase Award
    • First carving is $15.00; there is a $2.00 rebate if registered by mail or e-mail.
    • Additional carvings are $10.00.

H. Sponsor Purchase Awards

Eligibility:

  • All artists are eligible to enter carvings, and there is no completion date restriction.
  • The artist of the first place winner agrees to give that artwork to the Sponsor and will be awarded the prize money.
  • In the best interest of our Sponsors, if in the opinion of the judges, no work is commensurate with the 1st place prize offered, no cash award will be made and the work will remain with the artist.

Four Sponsor Purchase Awards have been offered:

  • Harvey and Daliah Organ Purchase Awards: Harvey and Daliah Organ are sponsoring two Purchase Awards for the Ontario Wood Carvers Association 29th Annual Competition and Show in order to encourage excellence in wood carving, and give a high profile to Carving Competitions and Shows in the woodcarving world.
    • Purchase Award I
      • A female caricature figure, entitled: The Lady is a Master Chef. It should be painted in colors, mounted on a base and be 9 inches tall without the base. The title should be inscribed on the base or on the figure. The award is $500.
    • Purchase Award II
      • A male caricature figure, entitled: The Masterly Pharmacist. It should be painted in colors, mounted on a base and be 9 inches tall without the base. The title should be inscribed on the base or on the figure. The award is $500.
         
  • Integral Group and OWCA combining efforts to sponsor the third Purchase Award for the 2008 OWCA Annual Competition and Show. It is a loon, life size or half size. It can be decorative or un-painted, mounted The winning piece will be presented as a “thank you” to George Lovrics, chartered accountant, for his valuable assistance to OWCA. The award is $500.
  • Michael Jewett and Brenda Gallie Purchase Award: Michael and Brenda are the son and daughter-in-law of Edna Jewett, who is the profiled artist in the Ontario Woodcarver Issue No 243 Jul/Aug. 2008 edition. Edna is 99 years of age and one of the oldest and founding members of the Ontario Woodcarvers Association. The winning piece will be the best caricature, or relief carving or carving in the round, that best exemplifies the artistic spirit of Edna Jewett, as described in the above mentioned article in the Ontario Woodcarvers Association’s magazine. The award is $500.
