December 10, 2007 - Potluck social
Please bring some finger food to share with each other
.

Well, we definitely had more food then people, and every bit of the food was delicious, especially the home made once, and for that a special thanks to all who participated.

Bert Hirt surprised all of us, presenting the executives and some members with his gorgeous lace carved ornaments as a token of his appreciation for work done during the year. Bert, we owe you a big thank you and hope, that you carved one of these special ornaments also for yourself.

January 21, 2008 - Show and Tell

Please bring some of your resent work to show and the one you are currently working on. If you have a work in progress, that you have some concerns with, or looking for some advise, also bring it in.

In honor of Ty Lumberg keeping the Show and Tell alive this activity now renamed to: “IT IS NOT A DUCK
There were more than 25 carving with some nice and interesting story about them.

February 11, 2008 - ”Carving Variation”

Everyone will receive the same simple pattern, and can select the method of carving it. It is for sure that we will come up with many variations for the same pattern. There will be special “carving variation” category at our In-House Competition in March for these magnificent creations. We have a donation of battle of vine for the winner of category. If anyone, who was not able to attend the workshop, would like to try, here is the pattern. It is a top view of something. Your job to figure it out what it could be. Keep only the major elements and feel free to interpret the rest according to your artistic imagination. Please enlarge it to approximately 6” by 6”. It could be chip carved, low or high relief carved, or if you want to picture the other views of it, it can be carved in the round. Let see how many variations we can come up with.

March 17, 2008 - In-house Competition

Bring all your current carvings in! And do not forget the “carving variations”.

In-house competition results.

April 21, 2008 - Gabriella, The Falcon,  with TIM ROGERS, Falconer

The bird Tim will be bringing to the meeting is a six year old Harris Hawk named “GABRIELLA”
.

Tim will also be bringing a mounted Screech Owl and Great Horned Owl. Before and after Tim’s presentation members can have a close up look at Gabriella.

Pictures are fine and a flash doesn’t bother her. During the presentation Tim will talk about the bird as well as the history of falconry. He will also bring along all the associated equipment and possibly a couple of videos showing the birds in flight.

In addition, Tim will explain how to make an owl whistle from empty film cans. He will have enough for members to try making one. Maybe members can come up with a wooden one! Gabriella molts every year so Tim will bring some feathers that could be used as a reference.

This evening was one of the best the best!

April 21, 2008. This issue of the Ontario Woodcarver was ready for printing. Than at the evening general meeting Tim Rogers, falconer made his “Birds of Pray” demonstration. And what a demonstration it was!

Gabriella, a nine year old Harris Hawk was gratefully co-operated during the presentation. We all learned something new about various raptor species and Falconry in general. Look for more information about this event in our next issue of Ontario Woodcarver. For now, here are some pictures taken by Collin Bradley.
